Dom City Stomp

Swing in Utrecht is very excited to bring you the very first edition of Dom City Stomp – our very own Solo Jazz festival!

Welcome

What is this event about?

We want to bring together dancers from the Netherlands and beyond to celebrate the roots of the dance we love. This weekend will be dedicated to explore the connection between Jazz and movement, the rhythms and shapes that connect us to the music and let us express our individuality. We are bringing you international teachers who will share their approach to solo jazz dancing. Classes will range from foundational material, to choreos to collaborative practice.

And of course we will party! Lindy Hop, solo Jazz and other swing dances are part of a common culture that should be shared on the same dancefloors. We have Live music on Saturday and Sunday plus a welcome party on Friday night.

What is Solo Jazz?

Solo Jazz is the cultural and historical stem of swing dancing (including Lindy Hop) and of many other dance forms originating in the Afro-American tradition. It has its roots in the culture of the African diaspora and it evolved in close connection to Jazz music in North America over the course of the 20th Century. It celebrates dancing as an expressive art form, focused on rhythm, connection to the music, and a strong social component. In Solo Jazz, body movements are seen as a vehicle to share your individuality with others and the community, and its vocabulary is the one of rhythms and grooves.

Teachers

Hailing from Athens, Greece, Vassiliki Papadopoulou has been dancing since the age of 8, beginning with classical ballet and later exploring contemporary, ballroom, and Latin dances. At 19, she discovered her passion for Lindy Hop and Authentic Jazz, and has been dedicated to them ever since.

She is the co-founder of Hoppers, a swing dance school based in Athens, Greece, where she works as a teacher, choreographer, DJ, and artistic curator. Since 2016, she has been teaching Lindy Hop and Authentic Jazz professionally at festivals and workshops worldwide.

Inspired by the music of the era, she is driven by rhythm, personal expression, and freedom. She is committed to honouring the values of this African American art form with respect and responsibility, while encouraging dancers to connect with the music and express themselves freely.

Nelly Matevosyan is a jazz dancer and educator originally from Armenia. Based in Vienna, she has been actively engaged in the dance community, teaching, performing, and researching jazz dance, lindy hop, and other African and African-American dance styles.

She earned two master’s degrees in linguistics, reflecting her interest in exploring the interplay between language, cognition, spirituality, and music. With almost a decade of experience teaching solo jazz and lindy hop, Nelly focuses on empowering her students to find their own connection to the dance, cultivating freedom of mind and movement.

Levels

Intermediate

You know some basic solo jazz vocabulary and have learned one or more classic routines such as the Shim Sham, Mama Stew, or the Tranky Doo — and might even still remember them. You have a basic understanding of jazz rhythms and can combine familiar moves into short phrases. You are looking to widen your repertoire and for tools to make solo dancing more accessible.

Advanced

You are comfortable with a broad range of solo jazz rhythms and fundamental combinations. You can take familiar movement vocabulary and adapt it, reshape it, and play with rhythmic variation.

You are able to improvise and may already enjoy jamming with others at social dances or parties. You would likely feel at ease joining routines such as the Big Apple, Tranky Doo, Trickeration, or similar material.

You are looking to improve the quality of your movements, your connection to the musical elements and the precision of your rhythms.
